How To Be Taken Seriously As A Leader

Being in the HR industry, being taken seriously is a concern for the professional and those that you are potentially training or leading. Leaders are grown, not born, so that means that you have the ability to becme the best leader that you can be with some practice and self awareness. Human resources is all about relating to others and becoming a great leader is much the same. If you already possess the skills needed for your HR career path then you are well on your way to becoming a leader that others love to follow!

Here are some of my personal tips on how to become a more effective and respected leader. Print these out – place them on your desk and meditate on these. They may seem simple but when you act out each one in the workplace to the best of your abilities, you will start to see that mutual respect come right back to you.

  1. Respect others. The most important way to gain respect from others is to show it first.
  2. Assert yourself.
  3. Be open to learning.
  4. Communicate effectively.
  5. Find a mentor.
  6. Manage your time.
  7. Create boundaries.
  8. Look the part.

Which of these aspects of the position do you feel you have mastered? Which of these do you still need to work on? Knowing how to be self aware when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses is a great way to elevate yourself in your position and career.
